In the 16th and 17th centuries, Azerbaijan was primarily under the rule of the Safavid Empire, one of the most influential Persian empires in history. The Safavids dominated much of the region, including Azerbaijan, which was an important territory for the Azerbaijan Phone Number List empire due to its strategic location between the Caspian Sea and the Caucasus Mountains, as well as its economic and cultural significance.

The Safavid Empire (1501–1736)
The Safavid Empire was founded by Shah Ismail I in 1501, marking the beginning of a new Persian dynasty. Azerbaijan, particularly its region of Iranian Azerbaijan (which includes modern-day northwestern Iran and parts of southern Azerbaijan in the South Caucasus), became one of the core areas of the empire. The Safavids, who were of Azerbaijani Turkic origin, had strong cultural and political ties to Azerbaijan, and Shah Ismail I himself hailed from the region. The Safavid rulers established their capital in Tabriz, which was located in Azerbaijan and became a major cultural and economic center during this period.

Under the Safavid Empire, Azerbaijan experienced significant political, cultural, and economic development. The Safavids promoted the spread of Shia Islam as the state religion, which had lasting implications for the region. Azerbaijan became one of the most important Shia centers, and this religious transformation deeply influenced the region’s cultural identity.

Key Events and Cultural Flourishing
The 16th and 17th centuries were marked by both internal consolidation and external conflict. The Safavids initially struggled with the Ottoman Empire to the west and the Uzbeks to the east. The Ottomans, who were Sunni Muslims, sought to expand their influence into Azerbaijan, leading to frequent wars and shifting borders between the two empires. Despite these conflicts, the Safavids were able to maintain control over Azerbaijan for much of the period.

During this time, Tabriz flourished as a cultural hub, attracting artists, poets, and scholars. The Safavids promoted the development of Persian art, architecture, and literature, and Tabriz became an important center for Persian carpets, miniature painting, and calligraphy. Moreover, the Safavid rulers invested in building and repairing infrastructure, including roads, mosques, and caravanserais, which further enhanced Azerbaijan’s importance as a crossroads of trade and culture.

Decline of Safavid Power
By the late 17th century, however, the Safavid Empire began to weaken due to internal strife, external invasions, and economic challenges. In particular, the Afghan invasions in the early 18th century and the rise of rival powers led to the eventual downfall of the Safavids. In 1736, the Safavid dynasty was formally overthrown by Nader Shah, who established a new dynasty in Persia.

Despite the collapse of the Safavid Empire, the legacy of Safavid rule in Azerbaijan remained significant. The Safavids had shaped the region’s religious, cultural, and political landscape, and their impact can still be seen in Azerbaijan’s historical identity. The 16th and 17th centuries under the Safavids were a period of cultural renaissance, religious consolidation, and territorial contestation, which significantly influenced the course of Azerbaijani history.
